In a recent statement Ankit Kaliyar the strength coach of the Indian cricket team, addressed the fitness levels of two key players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Despite external criticism regarding Rohit Sharma‘s physique, Kaliyar asserts that the India captain is on par with Virat Kohli in terms of fitness.
As the Indian team gears up for the Test series against South Africa starting on December 26, Rohit Sharma’s physical condition has become a topic of discussion. Sharma, who hasn’t played since the World Cup final defeat to Australia, is returning in the upcoming Boxing Day Test. Kaliyar notes that despite appearing bulkier, Sharma has demonstrated excellent fitness and agility on the field, passing the Yo-Yo test.
Kaliyar’s statement aims to dispel doubts about Rohit Sharma’s fitness. He emphasized that he is as fit as Virat Kohli, the former captain of the Indian cricket team. Kohli, renowned for his dedication to fitness, has set a high standard for athleticism globally. Collaborating with coach Ravi Shastri, Kohli introduced the Yo-Yo test.
The fitness parameter has been a key factor in India’s historic victories during Kohli’s captaincy. This list includes a Test series triumph in Australia and a notable draw in the Pataudi Trophy in England (2021-22).
According to Kaliyar, Virat Kohli is not only the fittest player in the Indian team but also holds the title of the fittest athlete globally.
“Virat Kohli stands as the most fit player not only in the Indian team but globally. His secret lies in maintaining a rigorous routine. Whether on the field or off, he diligently manages his nutrition, training, supplements, and conditioning. Kohli is exceptionally committed to his schedule, making him the fittest athlete in India and around the world,” Kaliyar said to the Times of India.
“Virat sets the standard for fitness, becoming a role model within the team. His dedication has fostered a fitness culture, making him an inspiration for others. As captain, he prioritized fitness, instilling confidence in teammates. Virat’s emphasis on fitness created a disciplined team culture. He is the driving force behind the fitness of all Indian players,” he concluded.
