It is almost confirmed that Rohit Sharma will sit out of the fifth and final Test against Australia, with Jasprit Bumrah leading the side for second time in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Rohit was unavailable for the series opener in Perth due to birth of his second child and the speedster was given the captain’s armband. He took 8 wickets and won the contest for the visitors.
Sharma returned for the second game but failed to inspire the players, with India losing two Tests and drawing one. Former India player Sunil Gavaskar was put in a tricky situation regarding the team’s new skipper in the longest format of the game by India Today but the legendary cricketer gave a brilliant answer.
“India have Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Shubman Gill. Any one among these cricketers can replace Rohit Sharma if he decides to leave the job. Who should be the team’s new captain?” Nikhil Naaz questioned Gavaskar.
“I think a player who is available for the final of World Test Championship in 2027 should lead India,” he said.
He was referring to Bumrah, who is the only player, who is guaranteed a spot in the team. Kohli has failed miserably in the five-match Test series against Australia and there is a possibility of him getting dropped after the tour.
Shubman Gill is also struggling for runs in red-ball cricket while KL Rahul hasn’t cemented his place. Rohit will bid adieu to the format after the Sydney Test.
