With winter weather sweeping the country and another storm brewing ready to wreak havoc, it’s easy to fantasise about a sunny break away from the cold and snow of the season.
If you want a holiday with culture, delicious food, trendy cafes and 26C weather, then South Africa is a great option.
According to Will Sarson, Travel Expert at Riviera Travel, Johannesburg is an up-and-coming destination that’s not only hot but quieter than other more popular places.
He said: “Johannesburg offers warm weather, rich history, and vibrant culture. South Africa’s largest city delivers a unique and meaningful escape.”
When it comes to what you should do in the city, Sarson said: “A visit to the Apartheid Museum is a must.
“This powerful exhibition charts the nation’s journey from segregation to democracy, including Nelson Mandela’s historic release.
“Using original materials, photographs, film, and eyewitness accounts, it’s a humbling and inspiring experience.”
It’s not all just history and education, although that is a very important part of visiting this country. There’s also creativity and charm in spades.
Sarson advises tourists to get out and see the city. “Explore the Maboneng Precinct, with its street art and trendy cafes, or visit The Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage site nearby.
“With its sunny climate and mix of culture, history, and adventure, Johannesburg is a rewarding alternative to the usual winter sun hotspots.”
Johannesburg is famous for its food, too. South African meals often have meat as a staple ingredient and one of it’s most famous foods is biltong, which is preserved meat marinated in spices to give it an exceptional South African flavour.
Before the invention of refrigerators, South Africans used to preserve dried meat, which is where biltong originated from and it is now part of South Africa’s culture.
If you want to explore the city for yourself, Skyscanner currently has flights on offer from across the UK in February starting at just £483.
