Indian openers were dismissed cheaply in the ongoing five-match T20I series against England. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma failed to capitalize on the good batting track and were undone by the sheer pace of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood. Samson has registered two ordinary performances in Kolkata and Chennai.
His new habit of moving a lot in the crease and trying to hit sixes is behind the departures. Samson is not using the pace of the fast bowlers and instead trying to target the leg side. He managed 5 runs off 7 balls before Archer sent him back to the dressing room.
Former player Sunil Gavaskar didn’t like his shot selection and slammed the batter for throwing his wicket away. “Not the smartest of the options by Sanju Samson. He was unsettled by pace after being hit on the gloves,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
Deep Dasgupta also questioned Samson’s batting style. “He should have used the pace of the bowler instead of going hard. Sunny sir says that if a bowler is fast, batter can stay in the crease and use the pace,” he said.
Gavaskar was quick to respond. “This is T20 cricket and he is not looking to hit fours as he wants sixes.”
