Josh Inglis made an unforgettable mark in Australian cricket history with a record-breaking century on Test debut during the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle Cricket Stadium. On day two of the match, Inglis scored a remarkable century in just 90 balls, making him the second-fastest to achieve the feat in Test history. His blazing knock came after Australia won the toss and chose to bat first, with the team already enjoying a solid foundation from the top order.
Australia promoted Travis Head to the opening spot following his success in India, leading to Josh Inglis taking a middle-order position. Sam Konstas was dropped, and Inglis played as a specialist batter, with Alex Carey keeping wicket.
Players with the Fastest Centuries in Their First Test Match
85 – Shikhar Dhawan vs Australia in 2013 at Mohali
90 – Josh Inglis vs Sri Lanka in 2025 at Galle
93 – Dwayne Smith vs South Africa in 2004 at Cape Town
99 – Prithvi Shaw vs West Indies in 2018 at Hyderabad
Inglis came in after a 266-run partnership between Smith and Khawaja and continued the momentum, becoming the third Australian to score a century in the match. He also became the second-fastest debutant to score a Test century, behind Shikhar Dhawan, and the fourth player in history to do so in under 100 balls.

Inglis’s century also marked another milestone, as he became the first Australian to score a Test debut century in 10 years, since Adam Voges did so in 2015 against the West Indies. Prior to this, Inglis was a key part of Australia’s white-ball teams, featuring in the 2021 T20 World Cup-winning squad and playing a crucial role in their 2023 Cricket World Cup triumph.
Australia’s total surpassed 600, bolstered by Khawaja’s 232 and Smith’s 141. With Cummins absent, Smith captained the team, which is guaranteed a spot in the 2025 World Test Championship final. Inglis is also set to play for Punjab Kings in the 2025 IPL season.
