Mohammed Shami was tired after bowling just three overs in the first ODI against England. He left the field and was seen gasping for breath in the dugout before returning in the seventh over of England’s innings. He was not at his best in his opening spell, but his next two bursts saw the speedster bowling bouncers and keeping the ball close to the stump.
The right-arm seamer was impactful and managed to pick up a wicket as well. It would boost his confidence for the remaining two matches and the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Former India coach Sanjay Bangar explained what triggered Shami’s comeback in the game. “He was disappointed with himself. The top athletes maintain standards, and when they are not able to achieve something, they get disturbed.
“Shami became more aggressive in the second and third spells, and we saw him returning to his best. His run-up is enough to tell about his form. Shami bowled bouncers and kept England’s batters on the back foot. He will sleep peacefully,” he said on Sports 18.
Shami was included in the five T20Is series against Jos Buttler’s team but was given two games by captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir. The management wanted to keep him fresh for the ODI assignment against the English team and the global tournament in Pakistan and Dubai.
