The stunning medieval city of Granada, Spain, has been named the most affordable European destination for wellness travel, according to Book Retreats’ 2025 Wellness Cost Index. The report surveyed 19 popular wellness destinations across Europe, with Granada ranking as the best-value city, offering a budget-friendly experience that is £170 cheaper than Athens and the Canary Islands.
One of its greatest draws is the Alhambra, a breathtaking Moorish palace and fortress complex that stands as a testament to Spain’s rich Islamic heritage. The intricate architecture, peaceful courtyards, and sweeping views of the city create a serene setting for visitors looking to immerse themselves in history while enjoying a tranquil escape.
For those looking to unwind, Granada offers traditional Arabic baths, known as hammams, which provide a restorative experience with thermal pools, steam rooms, and massages.
Hammam Al Andalus, one of the city’s most famous bathhouses, allows visitors to step back in time and experience centuries-old relaxation rituals. The city’s Albaicín quarter, a UNESCO-listed neighbourhood with its winding cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses, offers a picturesque setting for leisurely walks and stunning sunset views over the Alhambra.
Beyond its cultural attractions, Granada is also a gateway to nature. The Sierra Nevada mountains, just a short drive from the city, provide opportunities for hiking and reconnecting with the natural world.
Trails of varying difficulty levels lead to breathtaking vistas, making it a perfect retreat for outdoor enthusiasts.
A major advantage for UK visitors is the ease of access to Granada, with flights from London as low as £40 one-way, making it an attractive destination for budget-conscious travellers.
Whether strolling through the Alhambra’s enchanting courtyards, unwinding in a hammam spa, or hiking in the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains, visitors can experience a rejuvenating getaway without overspending.
The survey placed Granada sixth globally in terms of affordability, further solidifying its reputation as a top destination for wellness seekers.
Other budget-friendly European wellness destinations included Varna, Bulgaria, which also offers excellent value for money.
With its stunning landscapes, historical charm, and unbeatable affordability, Granada is the perfect retreat for travellers looking to relax and recharge in 2025, without breaking the bank.
