On January 1, 2024, David Warner announced his retirement from ODI cricket days before he is set to play his final Test match. The decision has come as a shock for his fans, as they were prepared to bid farewell to the left-hand opener from Test cricket.
Notably, before the start of the Pakistan Test series, Warner had announced that the ongoing series would mark his farewell Test tour. On January 3, Warner will play his farewell Test match at SCG.
Meanwhile, Warner who recently won the World Cup with Australia, stated that he wants to spend more time with his wife and three daughters, which is why he announced his retirement from ODI cricket.
“I’ve got to give back to the family. ODI retirement was something I had said through the World Cup, get through that and winning that in India is a massive achievement,” Warner was quoted as saying in a press conference in Sydney.
Warner stated that he would end his retirement if Australia required a top-order batter for the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
“I know there’s a Champions Trophy coming up and if I’m playing decent cricket still in two years, and they need someone, I’m going to be available,” he added.
During the ICC World Cup 2023, Warner had an outstanding performance and emerged as the top run-scorer for his team. He scored 535 runs in 11 matches, with an average of 48.63 and a strike rate of 108.29. He hit two centuries and one fifty during the tournament, and his highest score of 163 came against Pakistan at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
