India’s new Test captain Shubman Gill led from the front by scripting records during the first day of the series opener against England at Headingley, Leeds, on Friday.
The 25-year-old Gill struck his fastest Test fifty, reaching the mark in 56 deliveries with the help of eight fours. It was his eighth half-century in red-ball cricket and his highest score in the European country so far, coming in his fourth five-day game.
He is the ninth Indian captain to score a fifty in his maiden innings as Test leader, and the youngest to reach the milestone at 25 years and 285 days.
He struck a boundary on Josh Tongue’s ball to complete the record. He added important runs with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a century.
Gill is ready to lead India to success in the five Test matches in England. The retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin have impacted Team India’s fire power but the young players are ready to take India forward.
