Certain lifestyle habits directly influence the progression of myopia.
Children between the ages of 6 and 12 are increasingly being diagnosed with myopia compared to a decade ago. One of the key reasons is that formal schooling typically begins around age six, when many children start complaining about not being able to see the board from the back of the classroom. Additionally, greater awareness among teachers and parents has led to earlier detection of myopia.
Dr. Jaee Kelkar, Director, NIO Super Specialty Hospital, Pune, shares all you need to know:
Certain lifestyle habits directly influence the progression of myopia. Children who spend long hours reading at close distances, using smartphones or tablets, or studying on small digital screens are at a higher risk. A lack of exposure to natural sunlight also contributes to the condition. Studies have shown that regularly playing outdoor games for at least 45 minutes can help slow myopia progression.
Early detection is key. When myopia is identified at a young age, it can be effectively managed. Children with a family history of glasses should undergo routine check-ups as a preventive measure. If not treated early, myopia can lead to complications such as amblyopia (lazy eye) or a rapid increase in prescription power. Fortunately, there are now several options to help control its progression, including low-dose atropine drops and specially designed myopia-control glasses.
For schools and parents, small lifestyle changes can go a long way in protecting children’s vision. Limiting screen time, encouraging the use of larger screens such as desktops to reduce eye strain, promoting physical activity, and scheduling regular eye check-ups can all contribute to better eye health.
