Former England Test captain Joe Root, who had made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals in 2023, has pulled out of IPL 2024.
“During our retention conversations, Joe told us that he will not be coming to India to take part in the Indian Premier League,” Kumar Sangakkara, Royals’ director of cricket, said. “Joe made a positive impact on the players in a short span of time. His experience will be missed by the Royals. We wish him success.”
Root was bought by Royals for his base price of INR 1 crore. He played three games for them but got a chance to bat in just one, scoring 10 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
“Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, Yashasvi Jaiswal learned a lot from him,” the franchise said in the statement. “His camaraderie with Jos Buttler amd Yuzvendra Chahal was one of the highlights of his short stint with the Royals.”
Root becomes the second England player after Ben Stokes to opt out of the next season of the IPL.
