Steve Smith, the former Australian captain who went unsold in the 2024 IPL auction, has named Virat Kohli as the world’s best batter. Currently in India as a commentator for the 17th IPL season, Smith is considered one of the greatest Test batters of all time.
In a video uploaded to the Star Sports Instagram account on Friday, Smith was questioned who he believes is the best batsman. The right-handed batter named Virat Kohli in response.
Virat Kohli is the fourth-highest run scorer in international cricket. In the 2023 ODI World Cup, he stacked 765 runs and was awarded the Golden Bat and Player of the Tournament. After missing the five-match Test series against England due to the birth of his second child, Kohli has returned for the 2024 Indian Premier League.
During the match against PBKS, Virat Kohli made history as the first Indian and third batter overall to score 100 or more innings of 50 runs or more in T20 cricket. The 35-year-old now has 92 half-centuries and 8 centuries in the shortest format of the game.
On Friday, Virat Kohli needs to hit three sixes to break Chris Gayle’s longstanding record for the most sixes hit for a single team in IPL history. Kohli has hit 237 sixes in 239 IPL matches, while Gayle hammered 239 sixes for RCB during his seven seasons with the Begaluru-based team.
