Ajinkya Rahane, the seasoned Indian batter, spoke highly of Jasprit Bumrah’s clear approach to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. Before the five-match series even started, the world’s top Test bowler communicated to the BCCI, captain Shubman Gill, and head coach Gautam Gambhir that he would only be available for three Tests. Bumrah played in the first, third, and fourth Tests against Ben Stokes‘ England side.
Bumrah’s performance was outstanding, claiming two five-wicket hauls at Headingley and Lord’s, with a total of 14 wickets throughout the series. In the concluding Test at the Oval, which India secured by a slim six-run victory, Bumrah was released from the squad on Day 2.
Rahane, who led India to a memorable 2-1 victory over Australia in 2020-21, praised Bumrah for being clear about his workload and how he approached the series.
“What I admired about Bumrah’s approach was his clarity; he knew exactly what he wanted before the series started. He said, ‘I’ll play the first Test, skip the second, and then return for the third.’ That kind of clarity is invaluable for a captain. It shows he has the courage to communicate openly with the captain and management,” Rahane shared on his YouTube channel.
“It also highlights that he’s putting the team ahead of his personal interests. At times, putting the team first can be challenging when you’re representing India. As a player, it’s tough because when you communicate that message to the team, sometimes you can end up being dropped,” he added.
Rahane also gave advice to the management, recommending that if they wish to have Bumrah available for all the Tests, he should be utilised in brief spells, like three or four overs, and avoid longer durations.
“His actions clearly show that he wanted the team to be fully prepared, even when he wasn’t playing. Due to his unique style, his body takes on a lot of strain. If you want Bumrah to play all five Tests, it’s essential to use him in shorter spells, like 3 or 4 overs,” Rahane said.
“I think England were cautious when Bumrah was on the field. They couldn’t fully execute their ‘Bazball’ approach. When he wasn’t playing, they felt freer. It’s crucial to manage his workload wisely to get the best performance out of him.*
