A beautiful tourist hotspot has been slammed as the most overrated attraction in the world. Warwick Castle is an almost millennia-old castle run by Merlin Entertainments, the same operator as Alton Towers and Thorpe Park.
Flight booking site Wingie analysed TripAdvisor reviews for the top 50 tourist experiences in every country, tracking 40 keywords and phrases to create a score for each spot.
Warwick Castle received the highest proportion of “overrated” mentions compared to every other landmark worldwide. Three out of five reviews called it “disappointing”, “expensive”, and “not worth it”.
People also said it was “overpriced” and that there was “not much to see” with many feeling that it was “such a rip-off”.
Tickets for the castle range from £22 per person pre-booked to £39 on the door which includes most of the attractions at the park.
Visitors to Warwick Castle can explore the castle’s interior, towers, gardens and ramparts as well as play areas, experiences and mazes featuring characters from Julia Donaldson.
There are also live shows focusing on the medieval trebuchet, birds of prey, jousting, archery, the dungeon, and more.
Others complained it was “extremely crowded” and was more of a children’s attraction than a historical site. But of more than 16,000 reviews, only 2,081 rated it one or two stars on Tripadvisor.
It dates back to a wooden fort built by William the Conqueror in 1068. It was then rebuilt as a stone motte-and-bailey castle in the 12th Century.
Speaking out against the study, a Warwick Castle spokesperson said: “This research is not reflected by the feedback on recognised sites where 73 percent of guests rate the attraction as ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’.
“Our own data from thousands of guests every week tells us they have a wonderful time, with 93 percent telling us they are satisfied or very satisfied with their visit in 2023.
“Warwick Castle is one of the UK’s most-loved family visitor attractions, bringing history vividly to life for all through a range of unique live shows and popular events.”
Also included on Wingie’s list of tourist attractions dubbed overrated by reviewers are Stonehenge and Bletchley Park in the UK, coming third and nine in the world.
Others were Kampong Pluk in Cambodia, Besakih Temple in Indonesia, Jungfraujockh in Switzerland, and Graceland in the US.
