If you’ve ever been on a cruise you may have heard the running joke that you should wear your tight fitting clothes at the start of the trip, as they may not fit by the end of your cruise.
Yes, a cruise ship is the place to go if you truly want to overindulge on your holiday. Packed to the brim with tempting dining options, passengers can visit restaurants, cafes, poolside bars and buffets while onboard, and since you’ll have pre-paid for most of it – bar perhaps the odd fine dining restaurant – then you may as well get your money’s worth.
Buffets onboard cruise ships will spoil you for choice, offering up various stations to cater for all whims and fancies.
From light salads and sushi, to pizza, burgers, hot dogs and chips, and a whole host of sweet treats for dessert, hungry diners can eat until their heart’s content.
But while there is a huge array of choice, cruise passengers have been urged to avoid eating one food item while onboard by a cruise expert.
According to Cruise Critic, passengers should steer clear of scrambled eggs at the breakfast buffet. This is because cruise ships need to make huge batches to cater for the sheer volume of passengers and so it isn’t uncommon for cruise lines to use powdered eggs.
These can have a watery, squishy texture and be lacking in flavour, so are best avoided. Even if the eggs are made fresh, they are left to stand under a heat lamp which can quickly cause them to dry out.
As such, passengers are better served by heading to the made-to-order egg and omelette station where chefs will cook you eggs from scratch.
Not only will this guarantee that fresh eggs will be used, but you can also customise your order by adding extra toppings like cheese, mushrooms, ham and onions.
Alternatively, you can also visit the dining room for breakfast instead of the buffet as here you can order yourself a cooked breakfast from the menu, rather than serving yourself food that’s been sitting under the heat lamps for a long period of time.
Ordering from the dining room is also a good option for those with specific dietary requirements, as it’s much easier to get assistance and advice about what is safe for you to eat.
