Cruise ships are getting bigger. The world’s biggest ship, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, debuted this year and can carry over 7,500 passengers.
The huge ship has 20 decks with seven swimming pools, the largest waterpark at sea and the tallest slide.
But while plenty of cruise fans have rushed to book a place on Icon, not everyone is such a fan of the ship’s design.
A Reddit user opined: “Icon of the Seas might be the ugliest, least appealing cruise ship I’ve ever seen. I imagine a legitimate clown designing this ship.”
Another user also slammed Icon of the Seas, suggesting: “It looks absolutely dated, cheap and hideous, decor and design wise.”
Despite this, not everyone agreed with the user’s verdict. One person said: “I think it’s a fine ship for what it is. If you’re looking for a classic ocean liner, it’s not trying to be that.”
Cruise ships come in all shapes and sizes and some guests prefer smaller ships with fewer guests and facilities.
A Reddit user ‘karenmarie303’ said: “My husband and I enjoyed so much about the Icon! So many activities, music and entertainment.
“So many beautiful modern areas to hang out. The views from that ‘ugly’ dome in the front are spectacular.”
Another person said: “I agree it’s not attractive. But it was a fantastic vacation. Lots of adult places to relax and chill out.”
One cruise guest said that while they thought the cruise ship’s appearance was a little “gaudy”, they thought it was “extremely entertaining”.
Cruise holidays offer a range of experiences and activities for guests and for some passengers, the trip is more about the ship itself.
Guests can visit a travel agent if they want more advice on which type of ship might be right for them.
If you’re looking to book a spot on a bigger ship, it’s important to check whether the ship will be able to visit every port you’d like to as some cities have size limits.
