The third Test between India and England will start on February 15. The Rohit Sharma-led side will undergo several changes, some forced and others based on players’ form. Shreyas Iyer will miss out because of injury, while there are reports that Rajasthan Royals’ star player Dhruv Jurel may make his India debut replacing KS Bharat.
The Andhra-based Bharat has displayed impressive glovework in subcontinental conditions, but his batting has left selectors wanting more. Since making his Test debut in the 2023 Border-Gavaskar series, Bharat has yet to reach a half-century in Tests and averages just 20.09. His recent performance in the second Test against England, with scores of 17 and 6, further fueled doubts over his place in the side.
On the other hand, Jurel piled up runs in the 2024 Ranji Trophy and shone in the unofficial series against the England Lions. A source close to the team told TOI, “Bharat’s batting has been well below-par, while his ‘keeping hasn’t been great either. He isn’t making use of his chances. Jurel, on the other hand, is talented, has a good attitude and has a bright future. He has done well for Uttar Pradesh, India A and the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. Don’t be surprised if Jurel makes his Test debut at Rajkot.”
BCCI’s strict action on Indian cricketers
With Ishan Kishan also out of contention, Jurel has a golden opportunity to stake his claim in the Test squad until Rishabh Pant recovers.
Ishan Kishan’s decision to train with the Pandya brothers in Baroda instead of playing in the Ranji Trophy has raised eyebrows at the BCCI. The board is reportedly unhappy with players skipping the domestic red-ball competition, especially since it serves as a crucial selection ground for the national team.
“All players, except those on national duty or recovering at the NCA, will be expected to play for their state teams in the Ranji Trophy,” a source revealed. “The board is not pleased with some players already focusing on the IPL starting in January.”
It remains to be seen how the BCCI will address this issue and whether they will implement stricter policies to encourage participation in the Ranji Trophy.
