The England men’s cricket team is facing a difficult time. Since their victory in the T20 World Cup in 2022, they have performed poorly in big tournaments. Their recent elimination from the Champions Trophy 2025 group stage was another blow. Jos Buttler resigned from the white-ball captaincy.
England are now searching for a new white-ball captain. Young batter Harry Brook is the current favourite to take on the role. But wicketkeeper-batter Sam Billings has expressed interest in leading the team.
Billings Eyes Leadership Role
Billings has not played for England since November 2022. His last appearance came in an ODI series against Australia after the T20 World Cup win. Now, he sees an opportunity to return as a leader.
“It would be an honour. Anyone would grab such an opportunity. I believe I can contribute positively,” Billings told BBC Sport.
He believes England have the talent to bounce back. He feels a few small changes could make a big difference.
“Domestic cricket always has plenty of talent, especially in white-ball formats. There’s no need for a complete overhaul, just make a few adjustments and select a well-balanced team,” he said.
England Needs a Strong Leader
England is searching for the right captain to replace Buttler. Ben Stokes is an ideal leader, but he is focused on Test cricket, especially with the Ashes and India series coming up.
“I have the utmost respect for Ben Stokes. There’s no one better for the role. However, his main focus is on Test cricket,” Billings said.
He also praised Harry Brook as a strong candidate for the captaincy.
“Brook is a strong candidate, but managing all formats for England has never been more challenging,” he added.
Sam Billings hopes to prove himself and earn a spot in the team. With England in transition, new opportunities are available. Whether he gets the captaincy or not, Billings is ready to fight for a place in the national side.
