Love exploring a new staycation destination on foot? While the UK definitely isn’t one of the world’s most walkable destinations, there are a few cities that are very pedestrian-friendly.
According to research from the expert team at Preply, Bristol is one of the UK’s most walkable cities and it’s easy to explore on foot on a mini-break.
The team found the city’s top five attractions are just 3.5 miles on foot from each other and it will take tourists around 75 minutes to walk between each site.
Sitting on either side of the River Avon, Bristol has been called one of Britain’s most artistic cities and it has the attractions to match.
At the Harbourside, once the city’s industrial port, tourists will find the contemporary art gallery The Arnolfini and the cool Spike Island gallery.
Each gallery has a rotating schedule of exhibitions and it’s just a short walk round the harbour between each.
Also at Harbourside, tourists will find Brunel’s SS Great Britain, the city’s premier attraction and one of the finest examples of the world-famous inventor’s work.
Visitors can lie in the bunks onboard, head below the water level to see the ship’s exterior, try on period costumes and even take a peek inside Brunel’s head.
A tourist ‘james’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Well this is just about as good as old ships get, great entrance museum section, but to go below the waterline was amazing.”
In the city centre, tourists will find the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and the city’s Cathedral, just a short walk apart. Pretty Clifton is a longer walk up the hill but tourists can hop on a bus if they’re feeling tired.
