Fig Old Fashioned

An old fashioned is a pretty delicious cocktail to make for happy hour, and it’s also a good one to order at a higher end bar. This fig old fashioned is the type of craft cocktail that you might find on the menu at one of those high end bars. But it’s super easy to make at home too!

This recipe comes from the latest cookbook by my good friend Maegan Brown: Brilliant Bites: 75 Amazing Small Bites for Any Occasion. Maegan is queen of easy recipes, and this book is another great one. It’s full of recipes for party bites, holiday bites, breakfast bites, snack bites, dessert bites and savvy sips. There are a ton of awesome ideas in this book for bites to serve at a party! I’m such a fan of old-fashioned cocktails, so I had to choose the fig old-fashioned to make. But the bites in the book are the star of the show!

🛒 Ingredients needed:

• ice (use a large ice cube from an ice cube tray like this)
• fig jam
• freshly squeezed lemon juice
• bourbon
• Cointreau
• sparkling water
• fresh fig

✏️ How to make a Fig Old Fashioned:

1. To a rocks glass, add a large ice cube that fits the glass.
2. To a cocktail shaker, add the fig jam and lemon juice and stir until well-incorporated.
3. Add the bourbon, Cointreau and some ice, and shake until well-chilled.
4. Double strain into the rocks glass, add the sparkling water and stir to incorporate.
5. Garnish with the fig slice, and serve!

➡️ Recipe Tips:

• Be sure to use freshly squeezed lemon juice. It will make a big difference over using store-bought lemon juice.
• My favorite bourbon to use for an old-fashioned cocktail is either Bulleit or Four Roses. You can use whatever appeals to you.
• You may use club soda in place of sparkling water, if you’d like.
• Fig jam can usually be found in the deli section of your market (where the more gourmet items are displayed). Use leftovers to make my baked brie with fig jam.
• Don’t use dried figs for this recipe.
• If you’re making this cocktail, and you don’t have access to fresh figs, use a lemon slice as a garnish instead.

What’s the best time to find fresh figs?

Fig season is typically July through October. But I’ve had success finding them in the more gourmet markets through December.
