Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has expressed his skepticism about all-rounder Glenn Maxwell’s suitability for Test cricket, stating that Maxwell “doesn’t deserve” to play for Australia in the longest format of the game. Despite Maxwell’s pivotal role in Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup victory, he was notably absent from the Test series against Pakistan.
Maxwell played a crucial role in Australia’s record-extending sixth ODI World Cup triumph. However, his standout performances did not secure him a spot in Australia’s squad for the three-match Test series against Pakistan on home turf. Maxwell’s last appearance in Test cricket for Australia dates back to 2017.
Ponting, speaking to 7news.com.au, emphasized that Maxwell’s exclusion from the Test side is justified by his limited success in first-class cricket.
“Having a ton of first-class runs is a must before earning a chance. In my view, he doesn’t deserve it now. Yet, if he goes back, scores in first-class matches, he could find his way back into contention,” he said.
Despite Ponting’s criticism, Maxwell remains hopeful about reviving his Test career. In an interview with SEN, Maxwell acknowledged the challenges in securing a spot in the current Australian Test side, which holds the title of World Test champions.
“I understand the current team’s situation. They’re playing excellent cricket and hold the title of World Test champions. There aren’t many openings for Tests at home. However, I believe I can be a valuable option during sub-continent tours. I’ll persistently work towards that and aim for an opportunity at that stage,” Maxwell said.
