GM’s fix includes stiffening patches and a strengthening bow on the underside of the roof panel

- 2023-2025 Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon models finally get strengthened roof panels.
- Impacted models can be dented during the high-pressure drying stage at a touchless car wash.
- GM has previously issued a service bulletin to fix customer-owned models.
One would expect rugged pickup trucks like the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon to be supremely strong and built to handle everything life can throw at them. However, since 2023, these GM trucks have been plagued by issues with the rigidity of their roof panels, which caused even dents after passing through a touchless car wash. What exactly is the problem, and what has GM done to fix it?
Many Colorado and Canyon owners reported that the roof panels in their trucks would flex during the high-pressure drying stage at a car wash. The roof panel was so flexible that it could actually be dented by the warm aim. Shortly after customer reports came to light, GM announced a service bulletin for 2023 and newer models to address the problem and now it started implementing a fix at the factory, ensuring that no new Colorado and Canyon models will leave the factory with an embarrassingly flexible roof panel.

The fix includes the addition of stiffening patches to the underside of the roof panel, as well as a strengthening metal bow running vertically across the underside of the roof. This bow is held in place with five screws, structural adhesive, and rivets. Once the roof is solid, GM then installs the headliner, GM Authority reports.
Anyone who owns a 2023-2025 Colorado or Canyon built before February 3, 2025, can also get their roof fixed. Vehicles with damaged roofs that require a repaint or bodywork repairs will need to have these repairs made before the panel itself can be strengthened.
Interestingly, there have been some reports among owners that roof panels are still susceptible to dents even after having the repairs made. Those still experiencing issues would be wise to get in contact with their local GM retailer to further diagnose the fault.
