Greece is one of Europe’s leading beach destinations and there’s nothing more dreamy than relaxing under the sun on an island.
Unfortunately, some of the country’s most popular islands have become a little overcrowded in recent years with one tourist describing Santorini as a “fake Disneyland”.
But there are several beautiful islands that are far less crowded in summer and although they might be a little harder to reach, it’s more than worth it for a little peace and quiet.
Express.co.uk spoke to several travel experts to find out which Greek islands are the country’s best hidden gems.
From a monk seal haven to a volcanic paradise with “secluded beaches”, Greece has plenty left to discover.
Alonissos
Michelle Wilson, travel expert at Travel Counsellors, told Express.co.uk: “I’d recommend Alonissos in the Sporades. It’s a two ferry ride from Skiathos and like another world. The capital of Patitiri is very small and tumbles down the hill above down to the sea – but be mindful if you can’t manage hills.
“Also worth visiting is the old capital of Chora (aka Alonissos Town), which has been lovingly restored and is still a work in progress, with panoramic sea views and tavernas perched so you can watch the sunset. It could give Santorini a run for its money, but with far fewer tourists. Not forgetting the protected Marine park where you can see such animals as monk seals if you’re lucky.”
Folegandros

Kythira
David added: “For a retreat away from tourist hotspots, consider visiting Kythira. Ideal for a peaceful getaway, this island of unspoiled beauty is great for travellers in search of a slower-paced break.”
Patmos

Anafi
