India were bailed out by KL Rahul and Shubman Gill in the team’s second innings of the fourth Test against England in Manchester. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan registered ducks, and with the team trailing by over 300 runs, the visitors were heading towards a crushing defeat. However, Rahul (87) and Gill (78) scripted a vital stand to take the score to 174/2.
Gill, in particular, was under the scanner for his failures in three consecutive innings, and he was getting slammed for his confrontation with England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Stokes.
He was blamed for India’s defeat in the Lord’s Test, with former players questioning his behaviour and batting. It was stated that his sledging pumped up the English team, with the hosts going after the rivals. They managed to defend 192 runs and secured a 22-run win to take a 2-1 lead.
Gill returned to scoring ways and has looked comfortable so far in Manchester. Harsha Bhogle mentioned that his argument had unsettled him. Sanjana Ganesan asked Harsha and Cheteshwar Pujara about the difference in Gill’s approach in the fourth contest.
“I think he was unsettled in his mind in Lord’s. I don’t think he is like Virat Kohli and it was surprising how he behaved in the third Test,” Harsha Bhogle said.
Pujara was also not pleased with Gill. “The aggression doesn’t come naturally to him. I was surprised how he reacted at Lord’s. That’s not him. I don’t think he was impacted by altercation as he doesn’t carry baggage,” he said.
