Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League, drawing the curtain on a distinguished 16-season career in the world’s most followed T20 tournament. The 38-year-old clarified that while his IPL journey has ended, he will still feature in overseas competitions.
The off-spinner returned to Chennai Super Kings in 2025 after being bought for RS 9.75 crore at the Jeddah mega auction. He shared the news of his decision in an emotional statement, which was soon followed by a heartfelt Instagram post from his wife, Prithi Narayanan “I love you! Grashwin99 Can’t wait to see you do new things and scale new heights”.
Her words quickly resonated with supporters, shining a light on the strength behind his professional path.
Across his IPL career, Ashwin represented five franchises: Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, before coming back to CSK in 2025.
Across 221 appearances, Ashwin picked up 187 wickets with an economy of 7.20, added 833 runs with the bat, and finished as the IPL’s fifth-highest wicket-taker. Although his final season produced only seven wickets in nine games as CSK finished at the bottom, his tactical nous and adaptability ensured his reputation as one of the sharpest cricketing minds in the league remained intact.
