Indian selection committees have surprised fans and players with questionable decisions over the years. The biggest mystery of Indian cricket is why match-winners like Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, and Virender Sehwag were not considered for the 2015 ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
These players were behind the Men in Blue’s title triumph in the 2011 World Cup, but none of them could make it to the team in the next edition of the global tournament. Bhajji, who recently came on Sports Yaari, once again touched on the controversial process.
“It is still a mystery for me. I don’t know why I, Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag were not given a chance in the 2015 World Cup. We all were fit and giving performances. The decision-makers felt that what was needed from us had already been achieved in 2011,” he said.
According to several past reports, MS Dhoni, the then captain, was behind the exclusion of these legendary cricketers. He wanted a new team and didn’t have a good relationship with some of the big names on the Indian team.
Meanwhile, India made it to the semifinal of the tournament but lost to Australia in a one-sided match.
