A day before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final, India opener Shubman Gill shared that he is using lessons from the 2023 World Cup final to prepare for the showdown against New Zealand on Sunday.Looking back at the 2023 World Cup final, Gill acknowledged the pressure of the moment
“There were definitely some nerves in that match,” he told the ICC ahead of India‘s final clash with New Zealand on Sunday.
“I learned a lot from that experience. It was my first ICC final, and I was really excited.”
Reflecting on that experience, Gill admitted to feeling the pressure of the big stage but suggested he will take a more composed approach this time, focusing on patience rather than rushing his game.
Reflecting on the game, he added, “It felt like I was running out of time to take control. In big ICC knockout matches, you can afford to give yourself a bit more time than you initially think.”
“We fell short in the 2023 World Cup final but bounced back by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. That momentum has carried into this tournament, and this final is going to be an exciting contest. If we manage to win, it would be a fantastic way to close out the format this year.”
He highlighted the value of experience in high-pressure matches and acknowledged the immense responsibility that comes with playing in ICC tournaments.
“It’s a huge opportunity for us. ICC tournaments always bring a lot of responsibility and pressure from our fans. In the last two ICC events, we made it to the final, and now we have another chance to go all the way,” he concluded.
