Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian pacer, chose not to celebrate his five-wicket haul on Day 2 at Lord’s, a performance that secured him a place on the Honours Board and saw him surpass Kapil Dev’s record. After missing the second Test due to workload management, Bumrah returned in style in the third Test. He took his 15th five-wicket haul by dismissing Jofra Archer, with a sharp delivery that beat his defence and hit the stumps.
Bumrah’s fourth wicket of the day contributed to India dismissing England for 387 after they resumed at 251-4. England’s total could have been less had it not been for vital half-centuries from Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse.
Bumrah broke Kapil Dev’s record for the most five-wicket hauls by an Indian bowler in overseas Tests, with 13 to his name, surpassing Kapil’s 12. This was also his second five-wicket haul of the series, with the first coming in Leeds.
Most five-wicket hauls by Indian bowlers in overseas Tests:
13* – Jasprit Bumrah
12 – Kapil Dev
10 – Anil Kumble
9 – Ishant Sharma
Even though Bumrah achieved a major milestone, he opted not to celebrate in the usual fashion. His fast bowling partner, Mohammed Siraj, raised the pacer’s hand.
Bumrah’s fiery spell on Day 2 dismantled England’s middle order, taking three wickets for just one run in seven balls, reducing England to 271-7. Though the tailenders fought back, Bumrah had already made a significant impact.
After England resumed on 251-4, Bumrah turned the game in India’s favour with his precise swing and seam. He first dismissed Ben Stokes for 44, with a delivery that hit off stump.
Bumrah then bowled Joe Root for 104 and removed Chris Woakes for a golden duck. Woakes edged a wide delivery to wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel, with DRS confirming the dismissal.
Bumrah nearly claimed a hat-trick with his next delivery, but Brydon Carse survived.
