Jasprit Bumrah is currently the best fast bowler in the world and is among the greats of the game when it comes to cricketing history. He has already crossed the 180-wicket mark in around 42 Tests and has been unplayable since he made his debut for India.
In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, the speedster took 8 wickets in the series opener and led India to win by 295 runs. Although he was a bit off-colour in the second outing, the right-arm bowler still managed to take 4 wickets at an economy of less than 3.
Former Australia batter Greg Chappell has lauded the bowler for his performances. In two Tests against Australia, he has taken 12 wickets and is the leading wicket-taker.
“Bumrah has been magnificent and he not only invites comparison with the current best performers but also to the stars of the past,” Chappell wrote in his column for The Sydney Morning Herald.
“For me, Dennis Lillee and Andy Roberts were the most complete fast bowlers, and where does Jasprit Bumrah stand in front of them and the other titans of modern fast bowling?’ he asked.
“He is like Lillee when it comes down to unsettling batters. His deadly yorkers and bounce help him in dictating terms like Lillee. His intensity and precision make him a nightmare for the batters like Lillee.
“His cerebral approach reminds me of Roberts. Both bowlers use variation to trouble batters rather than brute force. Bumrah’s 6-wicket haul in the 2018 Boxing Day Test against Australia was the modern day version of Roberts’ game-changing bursts,” he added.
He also compared Bumrah with Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.
“His ability to reverse swing the ball and bowl late-dipping yorkers keep him in the league of Wasim and Waqar.”
Greg Chappell further said that only Bumrah can stop Australia from winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
