Overview:
The replacement ball didn’t offer much for the pacers and was reportedly older than the previous one, allowing England’s Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse to build an unbeaten 82-run stand before lunch.
Former wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik shared his thoughts on the Dukes ball controversy during Day 2 of the third Test between India and England at Lord’s. Indian captain Shubman Gill requested a new ball after just 63 deliveries, citing softness, despite Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant spell, which had India in control with three quick wickets.
However, the replacement ball didn’t offer much for the pacers and was reportedly older than the previous one, allowing England’s Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse to build an unbeaten 82-run stand before lunch.
In a discussion with Mel Jones and Stuart Broad on Sky Sports, Karthik found the situation odd, suggesting Bumrah may not have agreed with the ball change. Broad, however, praised Bumrah’s performance, highlighting his figures of 5/74.
“It seemed a bit strange, especially given how much that ball was swinging, probably the most in the match and doing so consistently. They bowled 63 balls with it, and many of them moved. I’m not sure what the discussion was, but it appeared that Siraj took the lead on it, with Shubman involved, while Jasprit Bumrah seemed like he wasn’t ready for it, yet it still happened.”
“However, what happened next was even more intriguing, as they were unhappy with the replacement ball. It didn’t move at all, and they kept arguing with the umpire, eventually getting that ball changed too. But, even the new ball was somewhat older. It was a strange situation that lasted for about an hour,” he added.
“Honestly, that spell against Stokes, Root, and Woakes perfectly showcased what Jasprit Bumrah is all about,” Broad said. “He takes on the best batters in the world and delivers all kinds of dismissals. It was incredible drama, incredible theatre, and it’s exactly why I love Test cricket. Blue skies, Lord’s, a full crowd, and everyone fully absorbed in the action on the field. It was fantastic. He truly deserved a spot on the honours board.”
