Team India head coach Rahul Dravid has officially stated that KL Rahul will not take on the wicketkeeping duties during the upcoming Test series against England. This announcement comes just two days before the commencement of the first Test match in Hyderabad.
KL Rahul, who assumed the wicketkeeper role in the Test series against South Africa, will not be continuing in that capacity against England. The decision, as clarified by Rahul Dravid, is based on considerations regarding the series duration and the challenges of keeping wickets in India, especially against spin bowling.
Despite Rahul’s commendable performance as a wicketkeeper during the ODI World Cup 2023, the team management has opted to relieve him of the role, aiming to safeguard his contribution as a batter in the conditions of turning tracks in India.
Rahul Dravid addressed the media ahead of the series opener, highlighting the clarity in the selection process, which included the presence of two other wicketkeeping options, KS Bharat and Dhruv Jurel.
“Rahul won’t keep wickets in this series, and we’ve made that clear in our selection. We’ve chosen two other wicketkeepers. Rahul did a great job for us in South Africa, playing a big part in helping us draw the series. However, with five Test matches and the specific conditions here, we’ll decide between the other two keepers we have,” he said.
