India are currently 218 ahead of Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The visitors were 172/0 in their second innings at the stumps on Day 2. After getting dismissed for 150 runs in the first essay, the openers showed their class in the second innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal (90* off 193) and KL Rahul (62* off 153) didn’t get over-aggressive and entered record books.
This is the first instance that an opening pair from India has stitched a century partnership in Perth (including the matches contested at WACA and Optus Stadium). The previous best was an 82-run stand between Navjot Singh Sidhu and Krishnamachari Srikkanth in 1992.
This is also the highest partnership by visiting team batters at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul hold the record for the second-highest opening stand for the India National Cricket Team in Australia in red-ball cricket. They need 20 more runs to become the Indian opening pair with the highest stand Down Under in the longest format of the game, and surpass the 191-run partnership between Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth in Sydney in 1986.
