Former Australian captain Mark Taylor has criticized Mitchell Johnson’s recent criticism of David Warner and George Bailey, emphasizing the importance of relying on facts and data rather than personal feelings. While Taylor acknowledged Johnson’s right to express his opinions, he cautioned against the use of personal jibes.
In a recent column for a Western Australian newspaper, Johnson expressed his discontent with Warner, citing a text message incident earlier in the year. The former pacer questioned Warner’s grand farewell series, considering his recent Test form and involvement in the 2018 Sandpaper saga. Johnson also targeted George Bailey, the chief selector, accusing him of favoritism towards his former teammates.
Taylor shared his perspective on the situation, particularly focusing on the role of commentators like Mitchell Johnson.
“As commentators, both Mitchell Johnson and I have to examine and discuss situations. It’s crucial to remain objective and focus on facts and data, not personal feelings,” Taylor said.
Taylor acknowledged that commenting on decisions and actions is acceptable, as long as it remains rooted in numbers, facts, and data. However, he expressed concern about personal remarks, highlighting that Johnson has acknowledged making a mistake in that regard.
“I believe, as a commentator, there’s no issue with Mitchell Johnson expressing his opinion on whether George Bailey’s decisions were right or wrong. The only concern arises when it becomes personal. I don’t mind discussions based on numbers, facts, and data, but once it turns personal, that’s undesirable. Mitch has acknowledged his mistake in that aspect,” he added.
