Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are closely linked to MS Dhoni, who is worshipped in the region. The crowd’s excitement peaks when he bats. However, former India batter Ambati Rayudu feels that fans are more loyal to Dhoni than the franchise, which he believes isn’t beneficial for CSK.
In their first IPL 2025 match, Rachin Ravindra hit a six to seal CSK’s win against Mumbai Indians. Dhoni fans expressed their frustration on social media that Ravindra didn’t allow Dhoni to finish the game.
“It’s a bit overwhelming for newcomers, and while the support is great, you start to realize the fans are more focused on MS Dhoni than CSK itself. This is understandable, as the team has been built around him over time,” Rayudu shared with ESPNCricinfo.
“MS Dhoni has rightfully earned the title of ‘Thala.’ He’s the one making key decisions in CSK, and it’s reached a point where people are absolutely in awe of everything he’s done for the team,” he added.
Rayudu raised concerns about the crowd’s strong focus on Dhoni at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Despite Chennai fans being known for their knowledge of the game, Rayudu pointed out that some seem more eager to see Dhoni bat, even hoping that CSK batters get out quickly to make way for him.
“For years, many players have felt this, even if they didn’t speak up. While they love Dhoni and the crowd does too, stepping up to bat often feels like the crowd expects you to fail, with shouts for you to get out or anticipation of your dismissal,” Rayudu explained.
“It’s strange, and I don’t think it does the game justice. All the players are working hard and giving their best for the team. They’ve made plenty of sacrifices to get to this point, and when things like that happen, it doesn’t feel right. It’s something that could probably be avoided,” he added.
Rayudu suggested that Dhoni should address the issue.
“MS Dhoni is the most suitable individual to address this matter. If he tells the fans, These are our players, and they bat just like I do, it would really help calm the crowd and support the players,” Rayudu suggested.
