India defeated England by 336 runs in the second Test to level the series 1-1. With no Jasprit Bumrah in the Playing XI, there were question marks on the wicket-taking abilities of the remaining fast bowlers. The visiting team was dubbed as one bowler show, and some of the former players were asking the names of those who would take 20 wickets to win a game. Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep raised their hands and dismissed 17 English batters to prove that contests are won by the effort of all the players and not just one individual.
Siraj took 6 wickets, while Akash Deep added four to his bowling figures in the first innings. In the second essay, Akash dismissed 6 batters while Siraj got rid of 1 rival player. With the help of Shubman Gill’s twin marathon batting effort (269 and 161), India posted 587 and 427/6, declared. England were restricted to 407 & 271.
Harsha Bhogle opined on India’s victory and highlighted the magnificent display by Siraj and Akash.
“No Bumrah but yes Siraj and Akash. There were a lot of talks about Bumrah missing the Test and who would take 20 wickets. I feel the conversation shouldn’t have gone that far. This young Indian team has come of age. The two bowlers shared 17 wickets between them,” Harsha Bhogle said.
“The dressing room would be happy. Edgbaston has been breached. Shubman Gill scored 430 runs. Siraj took 6 wickets in the first innings, and then a young bowler from Rotas, Bihar claimed 10 wickets,” he added.
Shubman Gill was named the Player of the Match for his contribution with the bat.
