Australia captain Pat Cummins has ended the possibility of David Warner returning to the team for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. The southpaw played his farewell Test match against Pakistan in Sydney earlier this year, and he retired from international cricket after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
However, with Australia struggling to find a suitable Test opener, Warner made himself available for the matches against the Rohit Sharma-led team.
“I am always available. I just have to pick up the phone, and I am serious. The team had played just one red-ball game since their previous Test in February, so I had the same preparation as the other players. If they need me, I am ready to play in the next Shield game to prepare myself for international matches,” he told Code Sports.
However, Pat Cummins gave a sarcastic reply to his former teammate. “Dave, we are interested. We are taking it seriously, and we will be in touch,” mate,” Pat Cummins told Grade Cricketer.
“We had a conversation a couple of days ago. I can’t remember who called up. I wished him good luck for his BBL stint with Sydney Thunder,” he added.
Warner scored 8,787 runs at an average of 44.59, including 26 hundreds in Test cricket.
The first Test between India and Australia will start on November 22 in Perth.
“We love Davey, but he is retired. It is the truth. I think he doesn’t mind seeing himself on the back page,” Pat Cummins concluded.
Australia opened with Steve Smith after David Warner’s retirement, but the move failed as the batter was unable to score big. Smith will bat at the No.4 position in the India Test series.
