Overview:
With enough rest between fixtures, many hoped he would play one more match. Despite that, Bumrah stuck to the initial plan and did not appear in the final Test. The BCCI confirmed his absence with an official statement as the fifth Test got underway at Kennington Oval in London.
Jasprit Bumrah, who featured in only three of the five Tests during India‘s series against England, was released from the squad ahead of the final match at The Oval. Although it was been agreed in advance that he would take part in just three games, the extended breaks between the 1st and 2nd, and the 3rd and 4th Tests led to speculation that he might extend his involvement.
With enough rest between fixtures, many hoped he would play one more match. Despite that, Bumrah stuck to the initial plan and did not appear in the final Test. The BCCI confirmed his absence with an official statement as the fifth Test got underway at Kennington Oval in London.
At first, it was assumed that Bumrah’s non-selection was part of a broader workload management strategy. However, a new report has revealed a different perspective, suggesting that a knee injury was the real reason behind his unavailability.
“Bumrah is currently dealing with a knee issue. The positive news is that it’s not serious and won’t need surgery. The BCCI’s medical team is waiting for the results of his scans,” a BCCI official told The Times of India.
Bumrah’s absence from the crucial final Test has raised questions about his future in the longer format. With his injury history, it seems unlikely he’ll consistently feature in full five-match Test series, the next of which isn’t until 2027 against Australia at home.
He honoured his commitment by playing three Tests, but his absence in the decider, with the series on the line, disappointed many, including legends like Anil Kumble.
India’s Test schedule includes only two-match series against West Indies and South Africa. Meanwhile, Bumrah is expected to focus on key white-ball events like the Asia Cup in September and the T20 World Cup at home in early 2026.
“With the Asia Cup approaching and the T20 World Cup also on the horizon, he’ll want to be fit for those tournaments. Given the condition of his body, he can’t be expected to feature in every match. His workload needs to be handled with extra caution. Playing him in the final Test at The Oval would have posed a significant risk.
“There needs to be a well-defined approach to managing Bumrah’s involvement in Test cricket moving forward,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.
