Rahul Dravid has confirmed that the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will be his last assignment as Team India’s head coach. He has refused to apply for the job. Dravid was given an extension after the 2023 ODI World Cup. The Board of Control for Cricket in India made it mandatory to apply for the post, but Rahul decided against it, considering his young family.
India did well under his coaching and reached the final of the fifty-over World Cup in India. Although the team lost the final to Australia, the Men in Blue were lauded for their clinical performance.
“It is my last tournament as Team India’s head coach. I enjoyed working with the players and it was a matter of pride for me to coach the national squad,” he said.
Gautam Gambhir is the front-runner to replace the outgoing coach. There is no information on whether the KKR mentor has submitted his papers or not, but the apex body of Indian cricket has almost finalized his name.
The decision-makers are ready to wait for Gambhir and are prepared to ignore the rules and regulations to bring the veteran on the board. Gautam doesn’t mind taking up the job, as he recently spoke about the honour that comes with it.
“It is an honour to coach your country in international cricket,” Gautam Gambhir said.
