After India‘s dominant 68-run victory over England in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal on June 27, Rohit Sharma looked back on the team’s journey over the past year. Rohit got emotional as he sat outside the dressing room. Visibly trying to hold back tears, Rohit was comforted when his teammate Virat Kohli gave him a friendly tap on the shoulders.
While entering the dressing room after the customary handshakes with the England players, Kohli noticed an emotional Rohit Sharma and consoled him. Suryakumar Yadav also approached Rohit, congratulating the skipper after India secured a chance to compete for glory on Saturday. Rohit sat outside the dressing room, his head buried in his hands as he struggled to control his emotions, with television cameras capturing the moment.
Beaming with pride, Rohit Sharma lauded his teammates’ brilliance as India avenged their 2022 semi-final loss to England, thrashing the defending champions by 68 runs. Reeling from a humiliating 10-wicket defeat in Adelaide, the Indians bounced back emphatically, with Rohit leading from the front as his spinners rattled the opposition.
Rohit Sharma’s 57 off 39 balls topped the scoring chart for India, while Suryakumar Yadav contributed 47 runs. The two Mumbai batters put on a match-winning 73-run partnership in 50 balls.
India’s batters posted a formidable 171-run total, which ultimately proved too challenging for England to overcome. The Indian spin duo of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav wreaked havoc, sharing six wickets between them. Patel dismantled the top-order, while Yadav inflicted damage on the middle-order batters. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah maintained his wicket-taking prowess, claiming two more scalps, including the prized dismissal of Phil Salt.
The defending champions could not counter the Indian spinners and were bowled out at 103.
“Staying calm and level-headed will allow us to make sound decisions throughout the 40 overs. Making good choices consistently will be the key to getting us through this game successfully. In this particular match, our ability to remain steady and avoid panic has been the driving factor behind our performance,” he said.
“Our aim now is on playing good cricket in the final. We’ll give it our best effort, and the team is in good form and performing well. All I can hope for is another strong performance in the final,” he added.
India will look forward to breaking their 11-year trophy drought as they take on South Africa in the final of the competition on June 29.
