Sarfaraz Khan is connecting with a proud tradition of Mumbai cricket as he works towards earning a place back in the Indian Test team. He is following the path laid by Sunil Gavaskar by participating in the Kanga League. Although Sarfaraz has shown significant improvement in his fitness and has been in strong form in domestic cricket, he was left out of the squad for the recent five-Test series against England. To stay in rhythm, he has decided to compete in the historic monsoon competition.
The Kanga League, once the battleground for Mumbai’s cricketing legends Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Sandeep Patil, and Dilip Vengsarkar, is known for its challenging playing conditions. The tournament, which takes place during the monsoon season from July to October, is famous for its unpredictable and damp pitches that truly test a player’s technique and mental resilience. Having shed 17 kilos in the past year, Sarfaraz is ready to take on this tough challenge.
“Growing up, I heard countless stories from my father [coach Naushad Khan] about how Sunil Gavaskar sir once played in a Kanga League match despite arriving from England. My younger brother Musheer and I have always taken great pride in participating in the tournament. On our way back from Nagpur last evening [Saturday], we were hoping the weather would stay clear. Although it rained a little this morning, the weather was fine by the time I reached Islam Gymkhana. I last played in the Kanga League three years ago. I scored a century in 2018,” Sarfaraz Khan said.
“Every Mumbai player should take part in the Kanga League. Some players are worried that failing in the league could harm their future prospects, but Gavaskar sir and Sachin sir participated in the tournament without any worries. When big players participate in this tournament, it acts as a huge inspiration for the youth of the city. The Kanga League is a prestigious tournament and if you succeed over here, you can score runs anywhere in the world,” he added.
He marked his return by scoring a rapid 61 off 42 balls for Parkophone Cricketers against Islam Gymkhana.
