Ahead of the Champions Trophy, there was considerable drama surrounding the tournament’s format, with the Indian team playing their matches in Dubai. This came after the BCCI decided not to allow the team to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns, resulting in a hybrid model. There were even fears that India might pull out of the event altogether.
Despite these issues, the Indian team has performed strongly, securing a semi-final spot. However, there has been some speculation regarding the claims made by players and the board, as all other teams have played their matches in Pakistan without significant issues. Former India legend and commentator Sunil Gavaskar weighed in on the matter, highlighting security lapses during the tournament, including incidents where fans breached security. His remarks raise serious questions about the security measures at the tournament venues.
“Even in this tournament, there were incidents where people managed to breach security and rush onto the field during the game. I believe it happened in the Afghanistan match. When such events occur, it becomes nearly impossible for any government to approve the Indian team’s travel to Pakistan,” the former India captain remarked on Sports Today.
The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan match in Dubai turned out to be a one-sided affair. Pakistan posted just 241 runs, which India comfortably chased down, with Virat Kohli’s brilliant century leading the charge. This was the sixth encounter between the two teams in the ICC Champions Trophy. Pakistan had a slight advantage in previous encounters, but India leveled the score at 3-3 with a six-wicket victory in this match.
