Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has entered politics and will be contesting the parliamentary elections for the ruling Awami League, as per an ESPNcricinfo report. The 36-year-old will be fielded from his home district, the Magura-1 constituency.
The polling is on January 7, 2024. He is currently out of action due to a finger injury that he sustained in the ICC World Cup 2023.
Shakib is not the first Bangladesh cricketer to enter politics. BCB president Nazmul Hassan, director Shafiul Alam Chowdhury are in active politics. Mashrafe Mortaza was an MP during the previous elections and got the ticket for this year’s elections as well.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh will tour New Zealand but there is no information available on Shakib’s participation in the contests.
Bangladesh and New Zealand will play two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is.
