Two days after South Africa‘s heartbreaking T20 World Cup 2024 final defeat to India, southpaw David Miller opened up about the loss. Miller expressed his devastation, saying words could not describe the team’s emotions following their collapse in the chase of India’s 177-run target at the Kensington Oval on June 29. South Africa had been poised to win the big-ticket final, but imploded with the bat, squandering a winnable match.
The Proteas were in the command of the game, needing just 30 runs off the final 30 deliveries with six wickets in hand. However, they were unable to handle the immense pressure of their first-ever World Cup final, and ultimately fell short of the target by 7 runs. Despite coming agonizingly close to ending their long wait for an ICC trophy, South Africa could not lift the trophy.
With South Africa needing 16 runs in the final over, Miller found himself in a crucial situation. He attempted to start the over strongly, hitting a Hardik Pandya full-toss for a six, but was ultimately caught at long-off by a spectacular catch from Suryakumar Yadav – one of the best of the tournament.
The dismissal visibly devastated him, as it severely diminished South Africa’s chances of victory. After slowly walking off the field, South Africa struggled to find the big hits they needed, ultimately finishing their innings at 169/8 in 20 overs.
The 35-year old batter posted a story on Instagram, where he wrote, “I am gutted!! Really tough pill to swallow after what transpired 2 days ago. Words don’t explain how I am feeling. One thing I do know is how proud I am of this unit. This journey was an incredible one, with highs and lows throughout the entire month. We have endured pain, but I know this team has the resilience and will keep raising the bar.”
Several South African players have been reluctant to discuss their heartbreaking loss in the tournament final. The team had been victorious in a series of nail-biting matches leading up to the final, but ultimately fell short due to a lack of good fortune. However, Heinrich Klaasen provided a glimmer of hope for fans back home when he took down Axar Patel in the 15th over, smashing the left-arm spinner for 24 runs.
In the closing stages, Jasprit Bumrah delivered an exceptional performance, conceding just six runs and claiming a crucial wicket to stifle South Africa’s momentum. Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya then expertly closed out the match, securing India’s long-awaited title in an ICC tournament after an 11-year drought.
