A holidaymaker has slammed the popular Greek island of Santorini, saying they “couldn’t be paid to go back”. Despite its reputation as a top holiday spot with black sand beaches and stunning sunsets, one tourist was left unimpressed.
Santorini is known for its beautiful whitewashed villages and dramatic landscapes formed by an inactive volcano.
However, one Reddit user wasn’t won over by the island’s charms, complaining: “It was just packed with tourists to the point it was hard to move.”
Santorini, a popular Greek destination, is often packed with tourists. The island sees two million visitors each year and over 50 flights a day in summer.
The small size of the island, just 28 square miles, means that even short trips can take a long time. This can make it harder for tourists to see everything they had planned.
Another issue raised was the use of donkeys for rides. The animals are used to carry people from the port to the main town, a practice that has been criticised by animal rights campaigners. They argue that the donkeys are overworked and suffer in the hot Greek weather.
Another Redditor pointed out that Santorini’s problems are no secret.
“What I don’t understand is why people don’t know this in 2023. Just Google which Greek islands are best to visit and you’ll see Santorini and Mykonos are beautiful pricey tourist traps,” they said.
