A French city that has been dubbed a “mini Paris” is a great alternative for those looking for a European getaway without all of the crowds.
Thousands of tourists flock to Paris each month to see the likes of the Eiffel Tower and experience some of the famous shopping that the capital has to offer.
But while some rave about the popular location, others have admitted to being left disappointed at the large crowds and expensive food and drink prices in the centre.
Nancy – located in the northeastern region of Grand Est – has been said to offer a better experience for tourists looking to delve into French culture.
The Independent labelled it as such, saying: “Designed in the style of Versailles and Paris’s Place Vendome, Nancy is like the French capital in miniature, without the crowds.”
The city, which is located on the riverfront, is known for its late baroque and art nouveau landmarks, some dating to its days as the former capital of the Duchy of Lorraine.
Nancy is home to numerous attractions, with one of the most popular being the Place Stanislas which has been dubbed a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Designed by Emmanuel Héré in the 1750s, the square features traditional pale-stoned buildings and wrought iron gateways.
For those looking to explore most of the history that the beautiful city has to offer, the Vieille Ville is the charming old town that is home to the oldest city gate dating back to the 14th century.
There are also numerous hotels and B&Bs to stay in, offering more affordable prices than its much more popular coutnerpart Paris where rooms average £187 per night.
The business of Paris has even earned its own name among tourists, being dubbed “Paris syndrome” which reflects the disappointment some feel after visiting the famous city.
But for those who don’t want to give up on the appeal of France just yet, Nancy could make a great alternative for those hoping to experience some of the glamour and romance the European country has to offer.
