Dreaming of sipping ouzo on a Greek island, breathing fresh Alpine air in Switzerland, or working remotely from a sun-drenched Spanish village? That fantasy could be closer than you think – and better still, you could be paid to live it.
As the world becomes increasingly connected, several countries are offering hefty financial incentives to lure newcomers. Whether you’re a digital nomad, a family looking for a fresh start, or a student planning your future, there’s never been a better time to make the move. Here are 8 countries so keen on new residents they will pay you to join them.
Move to Ireland and get up to €84,000
Ireland is rolling out the red carpet for adventurous souls ready to breathe life back into its most remote islands. The Our Living Islands initiative is offering cash grants of up to €84,000 (£71,150) for individuals who are prepared to buy and renovate homes on 30 of Ireland’s stunning coastal islands.
The goal? To “increase the population”, “diversify the islands’ economies”, and “build sustainable futures”. And if you’re a remote worker or digital nomad, there’s no better place to call home.
Swiss village offering over £26,000 per family
Tucked away in the Swiss Alps, Albinen is offering a life-changing opportunity for those under 45. Adults who move there can receive 20,000 Swiss Francs (£17,460) – with an additional 10,000 Swiss Francs (£8,730) for every child.
To qualify, you must buy a home worth at least 200,000 Swiss Francs and commit to living there for 10 years. It’s an irresistible offer in a country widely hailed as one of the best in the world for quality of life.
Spain wants YOU – and will pay for the privilege
The Spanish town of Ponga in Asturias is dishing out €2,971 (£2,510) to families willing to relocate. Have a baby there? That’s another €2,971 in your pocket.
As towns and villages see their populations dwindle, local authorities are keen to welcome foreign professionals to revitalise their communities. And with golden beaches, world-class wine, and vibrant culture – who wouldn’t jump at the chance?
Greece will give you €500 a month to move to a peaceful paradise
The breathtaking island of Antikythera is down to just 45 permanent residents – but not for long if the local mayor has anything to do with it.
Newcomers can expect to receive €500 (£430) a month for their first three years on the island, courtesy of the Greek Orthodox Church.
“We need young families large enough to make Antikythera alive and full of children’s voices,” said Mayor Efstaratios Charcalakis.
Japan offers up to ¥4.8 million to live in rural areas
Worried about Japan’s plummeting birth rate, the government has launched the Regional Revitalization Program, offering up to ¥4,800,000 (£30,000) to families and expats moving to rural towns in desperate need of new life.
In 2023, only 758,631 babies were born – a 5.1% drop from 2022, and a far cry from the baby boom of the 1970s.
The USA wants you – and will even pay you to move
Think America is too expensive? Think again. States like West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Alaska are offering cash and rewards to those willing to relocate.
Sites online are out there to help potential expats find their dream American town – and the incentive packages that come with them.
Canadian students can cash in big
If you’re considering studying in Canada, the Saskatchewan Graduate Retention Program could be your ticket to a fresh start – and a major payday.
Students can receive up to CA$20,000 (£11,580) in tuition reimbursements, depending on their degree length. To qualify, you must graduate from an approved Canadian institution and either live in or plan to move to Saskatchewan.
