Shane Watson has issued a stern warning to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ahead of their upcoming clash with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). RCB will face CSK in their second match of the tournament on Friday, March 28, at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
RCB have not defeated CSK in Chennai for 17 years, with their sole victory over the five-time champions coming back in the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008. As a result, it will be a monumental challenge for the Rajat Patidar-led team to maintain their winning momentum in the upcoming match.
Discussing the eagerly awaited encounter, Watson suggested that RCB will need to adapt its team composition to counter CSK’s strengths.
“It’s going to be a massive challenge for RCB to play at Chepauk, particularly with the calibre of bowlers CSK have in their ranks. RCB will probably need to rethink their team strategy to counter CSK’s strengths. But there’s no doubt about it – Chepauk is a fortress,” Watson shared on JioHotstar.
Additionally, the former CSK player highlighted the significant threat posed by Chennai’s spinners in the upcoming game.
“CSK’s entire setup is designed to thrive in Chennai. Just take a look at the three spinners who performed superbly in their opening game against MI – Ashwin, Jadeja, and Noor Ahmad. They’ll prove to be a real threat on that pitch. Watching Noor Ahmad make such an impact in his first game for CSK will certainly boost the team’s confidence, knowing they now have another wicket-taking option,” he added.
Historically, RCB have struggled at the Chepauk Stadium, winning only five out of 14 matches played there. CSK’s spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Noor Ahmad were particularly impressive in their opening match against Mumbai Indians. Noor, in his CSK debut, took four wickets for just 18 runs and was named Player of the Match after his team secured a four-wicket victory. Consequently, RCB will face a tough challenge when they take on CSK, reigniting one of the most intense rivalries in IPL history.
