Jasprit Bumrah hasn’t recovered from his back injury, and the pacer is likely to miss the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He hasn’t started bowling yet, and the BCCI recently withdrew him from the ongoing three-match ODI series against England. According to reports, he will consult the surgeon in New Zealand, who operated on his troubled back in 2023.
Former South Africa fast bowler Vernon Philander wants the team management and the selectors to rest him from the less important matches and keep him ready for the big clashes.
He highlighted the roles of chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir in keeping Bumrah fit in the future.
“It is important to manage his workload between the tournaments,” Philander said in a media interaction during the SA20 tournament.
“Play him in important matches and give other bowlers a chance in less important games,” he added.
India are currently operating with Mohammed Shami, Harshit Rana, and Arsdeep Singh in white-ball matches against England.
Philander also mentioned Bumrah’s presence for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. “With IPL coming up, you want him to play all the matches, but how will you manage his workload? It is important to have a tough chat with him. As a bowler, he would want to play,” he said, asking the speedster to rest from the IPL.
India will play their first against Bangladesh in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
