Bumrah is set to feature in the Asia Cup 2025, leading India’s fast-bowling unit in the UAE.
Wasim Akram, Pakistan’s iconic fast bowler, has responded to the ongoing comparisons with India’s contemporary pace star Jasprit Bumrah. During his career, Akram became renowned for his ability to swing the ball and unsettle batters. In today’s game, Bumrah has earned recognition and is the most complete bowler across formats, delivering match-winning spells against the best sides.
Although fans, analysts, and broadcasters frequently compare legends from different eras, Akram pointed out that such debates overlook how much cricket has changed. Conditions, workloads, and formats are very different now, making a like-for-like comparison unrealistic. Even so, these discussions continue to thrive because they stir interest and dominate headlines.
While praising Bumrah’s quality and success, Akram emphasised that it is unfair to compare players of the 1990s against those of the modern era.
“Jasprit Bumrah is a wonderful bowler. His unique action, combined with a serious pace, makes him stand out. Credit goes to the Indian cricket board for managing him well and having the right approach. Comparing eras, like the 90s and today, is pointless. He’s a right-armer, while I was a left-armer. People on social media love to argue. Neither of us pays attention. He’s a modern-day great, and I had my time. I did what I had to back then, and he’s doing an excellent job now. I must say, he’s truly impressive,” Wasim Akram said on GEO TV’s Haarna Mana Hai.
Bumrah is set to feature in the Asia Cup 2025, leading India’s fast-bowling unit in the UAE. The 31-year-old has not played a T20 international since the previous year’s World Cup, with selectors deliberately managing his schedule to protect him from injuries.
