Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Jonny Bairstow on the last ball before lunch. He was hit in front of the stumps and the on-field umpire raised his finger, leaving Bairstow with the option of using the DRS. As Bairstow was walking towards his batting partner to discuss about the possibility of going upstairs, Ashwin pumped his hands in anger and screamed as he walked past the English batter.
Bairstow wasn’t pleased and said something to the Indian off-spinner before he walked away.
This is not the first time Ashwin has taken on the rivals and officials in the second Test. On day 1, he was warned by the umpires for running on the pitch while batting. He had a lengthy discussion with the umpires after getting a warning. He also irked James Anderson on Day 2. He was standing close to the umpire, which was disturbing the pacer and he even pointed out in Ashwin’s direction.
On Sunday, Ashwin urged the fans to chant in favour of the home team and get behind the Indian players. He was doing Virat Kohli’s job as the latter had opted out of the first two Tests.
Bairstow hasn’t scored a hundred in the last 16 Test. He scored an unbeaten 99 against Australia in the Ashes. England are 238/7 at the time of writing the news and still need 161 to win the second Test and take a 2-0 lead in the series. Ashwin has taken three wickets in the second innings and is one scalp away from 500 Test wickets.
